Our Singapore Port is internationally recognised as one of the busiest port in the world. Its development from a mere maritime trading post in 1819 to handling a quarter of the world's shipping containers is just incredible.
Coming to the question for this week....
What do you think is Singapore Icon? In other words, what do you think is representative of Singapore? It could be a symbol or a person. Even our Singapore Port could be one of them. Give me your thoughts on this question!!!

Well, i think that the singapore icon is the merlion or the symbol of a lion and a tiger or.... ,my GREAT GREAT GREAT grandpa... Yusof bin Ishak!!!!
have fun posting on this 6/1 BLOG !!! =)
Our first President, Yusof Bin Ishak is indeed a symbol of what Singapore has gone though in its early period of progress. However, we need an icon that is still very alive in Singapore today...that is, something that our Singaporeans can identify with. The younger generation is not aware of who Yusof Bin Ishak is except that he is on our currencies. We need to find an icon more relevent to everyone from younger to older generation.
This message is for Shawn...when you call Yusof Bin Ishak as your great great grandpa and if some important person in Singapore like our Minister comes across our blog accidentally...your comment might be taken as offensive. So 6/1 students be careful of what you post! Shawn, you can call him our Pioneer instead!
I think the Singapore Icon is the Sentosa as many tourists will go there. -Jia Xin
just a question i want to ask here. is Ah Meng Juniour of new Singapore icon replacing our laate Ah Meng?
-roline-
This is for Roline in reply to her question. Ah Meng shot to stardom through the program 'Breakfast with an Orang Utan' in 1982. From that program onwards, she had an emotional attachment to the visitors partly because she was interactive and very much like a 'human'. The Zoo used Ah Meng as an icon to promote the importance of preserving Orang Utan's natural habitat and in 1992, she was even given the title, 'A Special Tourism Ambassador' by the Singapore Tourism Board.
